Surprise proposal on an Amsterdam canal pontoon
A surprise proposal on a wooden pontoon over an Amsterdam canal, in the rain, under an umbrella. She said yes, and the session went on: a bouquet, the ring, red front doors and a dance on a wet brick street.
Session at a glance
- Session: Surprise proposal
- Where: Amsterdam canals
- How long: About an hour
- In this story: 18 photos and the route we walked
Where we walked
1. The proposal on the pontoon
The proposal happened on a wooden pontoon low over the canal, with canal houses across the water. It was raining, so an umbrella became part of the moment.
2. Right after
The first minutes after a yes are the most valuable photos of the day: the hug, the laugh, the first look at the ring. We keep shooting and stay out of the way.
3. A walk in the rain
Then a slow walk: under a red awning, down a narrow street, a bouquet of orange flowers. Rain makes the brick streets shine and keeps the crowds away.
4. Back to the water
We returned to the pontoon for calmer frames: sitting at the edge, the ring held up against the canal.
5. Red doors and bikes
We finished with two classic Amsterdam backdrops: a canal house with red double doors and a bridge lined with bicycles.
When Amsterdam rains
This proposal went ahead in the rain, and the photos are some of our favourites. If the forecast is heavy rain we can move the date for free, but light rain and grey skies photograph beautifully in Amsterdam.
Planning a proposal
We help with the spot, the signal and where the photographer stands, so your partner suspects nothing. See the proposal photographer page or tell us your plan.
