Where we walked
1. Canal steps below a corner house
We started low, on the steps down to the water below a tall corner house. From the opposite bank the whole house stands behind you.
2. The restaurant corner
On the Leidsegracht, the corner with Pastini’s tall white window frames gives a clean, warm background for close portraits.
3. Bridges with a view
The arched bridges over the Leidsegracht look along the canal in both directions. From one of them the canal runs straight towards a church spire, which frames the couple without any effort.
4. Staircases
A cream-coloured canal house with a stone staircase, and a grand double staircase leading up to a tall black door: two very different doorways a few minutes apart.
5. Along the water
We finished along a wider canal: a twirl by the water, a kiss sitting on the canal edge and a portrait above a canal full of small boats.
When this was shot
The session ran from just after three to four in the afternoon, under a grey sky. Cloud gives soft, even light on faces and keeps the colours of the brick and the doors true.
