Couple photoshoot in the western canal ring and Herenstraat
A couple photoshoot in Amsterdam’s western canal ring: a wooden pontoon on the water, bridges lined with bikes, canal-house doorsteps and a coffee stop on Herenstraat. Just under an hour, with an outfit change halfway through.

Where we walked
1. A pontoon on the canal
We started on a wooden pontoon low over the water. From there the canal houses are reflected right behind you, and the bridge with its old lamp post closes the frame. The first photos are quiet ones, sitting at the edge, before any posing.
2. The bridges
A few steps up, the bridges of the canal ring are lined with parked bicycles. Sitting on the bridge between them gives the most Amsterdam background there is, and a pink bike parked on the bridge made its way into the frame.
3. Sunflowers along the railings
Sunflowers came along on this session. Flowers give your hands something to do, add one strong colour against the brick, and work for walking shots as well as close portraits.
4. Coffee on Herenstraat
Halfway through there was a coffee on the bench outside Selma’s, a Nordic bakery on Herenstraat. A short break like this relaxes everyone, and the shop window makes a warm, simple backdrop.
5. Canal-house doors and stoops
After an outfit change we finished among the tall canal houses: black lacquered doors, stone steps, a street lamp and baskets of flowers by the door.
Why we started so early
The first frame was taken at 6:38 in the morning and the last at 7:31. At that hour the canal ring is almost empty, so the streets and bridges in these photos have no crowds behind you.
