Where we walked
1. A pontoon on the canal
We started on a wooden pontoon low over the water, with gabled canal houses across the canal. It is flat and wide enough for a toddler to take a few steps between his parents.
2. Shoulders and railings
Up on the quay, a ride on dad’s shoulders and a lean on the canal railing. Small children relax when they are carried or moving, so we keep them moving.
3. Canal streets
On the brick streets along the canal the toddler walked towards the camera while his parents crouched to catch him. Those first-steps frames are the ones families keep.
4. Front doors and stoops
Canal-house steps make a natural bench for a family: everyone at the same height, the child on a lap. One house had a sunflower growing by the door, which he reached for in the middle of a portrait.
5. A walk with the pram
We finished on a quiet residential street with the pram, an easy way to end the hour when a little one starts to get tired.
How we work with small children
We plan around naps and meals, keep the route short and flat, and let the child set the pace. Games and short walks work better than posing, and we take the posed family portrait early, while everyone is fresh.
Prams are welcome: the whole route here was on flat brick streets and quays.
