Solo photoshoot in the Nine Streets and on the canals
A solo photoshoot in central Amsterdam: canal walls and an arched bridge, an old street lamp, steep canal-house staircases and a coffee on a café terrace in the Nine Streets. Fifty minutes, one outfit, no experience in front of a camera needed.
Session at a glance
- Session: Solo session
- Where: Nine Streets and canal ring
- How long: About 50 minutes
- In this story: 18 photos and the route we walked
Where we walked
1. Down by the water
We started on the stone steps at the water’s edge and on a canal wall below an arched bridge. Sitting low makes the canal and the bridge fill the frame behind you.
2. Street lamps and benches
The old cast-iron lamps along the canals are easy props: something to lean on, something to sit under. A coffee in hand does the same job for your hands.
3. Canal-house staircases
Many canal houses have steep outdoor stairs with iron railings. Sitting halfway up gives a strong, simple portrait with the house around you.
4. The Nine Streets
We finished on Runstraat, one of the Nine Streets, with a coffee on a café terrace and a walk down the brick street towards the camera.
Why a solo session works here
Amsterdam’s backdrops are close together: in fifty minutes this route covered the water’s edge, a bridge, a staircase and a café terrace. The first frame was taken at 7:08 in the morning, before the shops opened, so the streets behind are empty.
