Where we walked
1. Along the canal railings
We began on the quay, with the canal and its trees behind the couple. Leaning on a railing is an easy first pose: something to hold, nothing to think about.
2. A small bridge
The low bridges over the side canals give a view down the water in both directions. Standing in the middle of one keeps the frame clean.
3. Canal-house steps
Amsterdam’s canal houses have stone steps and iron railings at the front door. We used several of them: sitting close on the steps, leaning on the railing, a pair of double doors with wreaths behind.
4. Brick lanes
The narrow streets between the canals are paved in red brick and lined with potted plants. Walking towards the camera here gives natural movement without any posing.
5. Houseboats
Further along the quay the houseboats are moored nose to tail. A hug by the boats and a quiet moment sitting at the edge of the canal are some of the frames people remember Amsterdam by.
6. The arched doorway
A carved white portal around a dark wooden door. We photographed it twice, in colour and in black and white, because the shape works in both.
A grey sky works
The whole session was shot under cloud. Overcast light is soft and even: nobody squints, skin looks natural and the red brick keeps its colour. If the forecast is grey, we keep the date. If it is heavy rain, we move it for free.
